Over the weekend of 7-8 May, Winstone Wallboards was proud to be involved as a principal sponsor of Open Christchurch, the annual festival that celebrates Christchurch’s diverse styles and cultural influences by providing attendees with a captivating exploration of the cities architectural landscape.

Organised by Te Pūtahi Centre for Architecture and City Making, it's a must-see event which gives the residents of Christchurch an opportunity to connect with their city by discovering new spaces and getting up close to buildings that were previously inaccessible.

As a local manufacturer and industry supplier committed to quality in the built environment, as well as firm believers that good design improves people’s lives - it seemed like a no brainer to team up with up with Te Pūtahi to help bring Open Christchurch to the city.

The festival invites visitors from all corners of New Zealand to explore the architectural wonders that have since emerged in the wake of the devastating earthquakes and witness firsthand the ingenuity and artistry of Ōtautahi’s architects and builders.

Open Christchurch 2023’s programme spanned 159 years and celebrated the works of Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney – one of the most significant architectural partnerships in New Zealand history. Other notable themes explored include the rise of the Christchurch Modern style, the coastal identity of the city and the changing approaches to Māori architecture over the past 30 years.

Over 50 buildings around the city centre were opened to the public free of charge, alongside a range of guided walks and various activities that highlight the significance of architecture in shaping our environment.

At many of the explorable buildings, dozens of architects, designers, historians and engineers took the time to welcome visitors, encourage them to consider the different approaches each structure required and address some of the challenges posed by the seaside setting for design and materials.

A structure like St. Faith's Church encapsulates the area's development as its congregation expanded, resulting in the establishment of the present-day church, while He Puna Taimoana hot pools represent a key catalyst building, designed to revitalize the area post-earthquake and establish connections between the coastal zone and the surrounding city.

From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, Open Christchurch is a true showcase for the breadth and depth of architectural excellence in Christchurch, and we were stoked to see so many Cantabrians getting involved and reconnecting with their city.

Winstone Wallboards has been a founding sponsor of Te Pūtahi since its inception a decade ago, and we hope to continue working with them to help support and tell the story of Ōtautahi.
