Closing the Loop: Building a Circular Future with GIB® Plasterboard

We take our environmental stewardship seriously and are really focused on reducing plasterboard waste for New Zealand and becoming a more circular construction industry.

We continue to gather data & evidence of GIB® plasterboard construction waste to develop construction waste baselines, that can help you plan efficient material use to save money on wasted materials, waste disposal costs and reduce our industry’s construction waste from going to landfill. Working with partners Naylor Love, we know that around 13% of all GIB® plasterboard purchased ended up as waste in a multi-story apartment build project (by weight)

In a perfect world, waste would not be created in the first place. This is something we can all work towards, and we are actively looking at our processes on ways to do this. Working with you, we are continuing to improve information available to you on how you can also play a part in this as well.

When there is waste in construction and manufacturing, we want to make sure there are beneficial and practical options that divert it away from landfill. Our customers are telling us they want this.

Increasing recycled content in our high-quality GIB® plasterboards, by ‘up-cycling’ both our manufacturing, and our sector’s construction waste is a key priority for us at Winstone Wallboards. With several partners across the North Island, we are gathering some excellent intel from collection trials to help us all design schemes in regional areas for collecting and then up-cycling construction plasterboard waste. This will take time to get it right. It must be a system that works for all of us, and we thank all of our amazing partners contributing time and effort to support us along this journey. We look to forward to updating you on progress towards this in early 2026.

We are also improving our resources and information if you have you can't up-cycle your plasterboard waste, such as from demolition, for 'down-cycling' pathways.

We know we can make NZ made GIB® plasterboards more ‘genuinely’ circular than most other NZ made construction products – which is better for our planet, our buildings, and our people. We are all in this together. Let’s achieve this together
