Can GIB Weatherline® substitute for GIB Fyreline®?

Since its introduction in 2019, GIB Weatherline® has expanded the perception of plasterboard beyond internal linings. It is now commonly used in applications exposed to the elements, including fire-rated systems.

GIB Weatherline® is suitable for use in fire-rated systems such as:
  • External walls

  • Parapets

  • Soffits

  • Wrapping beams and columns

We are often asked if GIB Weatherline® can substitute for GIB Fyreline®. However, there are subtle differences in the fire performance of specifications including these products, as well as differences in fastener type and centres, sheet jointing, and finishing.

For example, GIB Weatherline® wingwall specification GWSP60 requires a minimum of 92mm steel stud framing, ceramic coated GIB® Grabber® screws spaced at centres to satisfy wind loading and fire-resistance requirements, and GIB Weatherline® taped sheet joints, whilst GIB Fyreline® specification GBS 60 requires a minimum of 64mm steel stud framing, gold-passivated GIB® Grabber® screws, and plaster stopped joints.

Although these differences might seem minor, mixing and matching fasteners and/or joint treatment can lead to the specification of unverified systems.

Recommendations:

  • Fasteners

Keep the systems intact and install GIB Weatherline® with the specified ceramic coated GIB® Grabber® screws, and GIB Fyreline® with gold-passivated GIB® Grabber® screws.

  • Joint treatment

Page 18 of ‘GIB Weatherline® Rigid Air Barrier Systems, 2021’ describes when and how conventional stopping and painting of GIB Weatherline® can be carried out.

Page 14 of the ‘GIB® Site Guide, 2024’ allows substitution of GIB Weatherline® for GIB Aqualine®, including as a tiling substrate (follow the GIB Aqualine® instructions), but not as a direct substitute for 13mm GIB Fyreline®.
