Winstone Wallboards to build a new plasterboard manufacturing and distribution facility in Tauranga

Wednesday, 19 February 2020

Over the past few years we have been exploring options to build a new North Island manufacturing and distribution facility.

We are pleased to confirm that agreement and approval has been reached for Winstone Wallboards to build a new state-of-the-art plasterboard facility in Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty.

The new plant is a large investment and will ensure continuity of supply in New Zealand and enable Winstone Wallboards to meet demand over the long term.

Winstone Wallboards is firmly committed to local manufacturing and delivering the highest quality product for customers and New Zealand homes.  This larger, more modern facility will help to futureproof plasterboard manufacturing in New Zealand.

The current North Island Manufacturing site in Onehunga, Central Auckland is land locked, which has prevented us from expanding our operations and consolidating manufacturing and distribution on the same site. The new site located in the Tauriko industrial park is more than double the size of the current facility and allows for even further capacity growth in the future as well as new product innovation.

The Tauranga location is ideal for North Island distribution, as well as being near the Port of Tauranga for delivery of the raw materials used to manufacture plasterboard.

The new plant will also be more environmentally friendly, allowing recycling of used plasterboard and will reduce carbon emissions by 10 percent.

Winstone Wallboards, under the GIB® brand, is proud of the high quality, commitment to innovation and reliable level of customer service we provide. This new investment will ensure we can continue to support our customers with this high level of service both now and in the future.

The new Tauranga facility is planned to be opened in 2023.  The Auckland manufacturing facility will remain fully operational until the new Tauranga plant is fully commissioned.  At that time North Island manufacturing and freight into merchant store (FIS) distribution will move to Tauranga.  A facility will remain in Auckland to service Auckland Delivered to Site services.  Head office will remain in Auckland.

Winstone Wallboard’s Wellington and Christchurch operations will remain unchanged.

We will update you as the project progresses.  Until then, be assured that we currently have the capability, and the capacity, to service the market in the immediate years ahead.
